Zone of Proximal Development
Culture and it effect on a childs cognitive development

Zone of proximal development has more significance for the dynamics of intellectual development and for the success of instruction than does the actual level of development.
The idea is that children's participation in cultural activities with the guidance of more skilled partners allows children to internalize the tools for thinking and for taking more mature approaches to problem solving that children have practised in social context.
